Getting Your Body Ready for Pregnancy: Why Preconception Chiropractic Care Matters

Taking care of your body shouldn't start once you're pregnant. Why the months before pregnancy are a great time to be intentional about your health, your movement, and how you're feeling day to day.

Are you thinking about growing your family? There are so many things to think about when preparing for pregnancy, but one thing I want you to consider is how well you're taking care of your body before you even get that positive pregnancy test!

As a chiropractor who works with growing families, I believe taking care of your body shouldn't start once you're pregnant. The months leading up to pregnancy are a great time to be intentional about your health, your movement, and how you're feeling day to day.

"Think of preconception care as building a strong foundation for the next stage of your family's journey."

So, where do you start?

1. Start with your nervous system.

Your nervous system plays an important role in how your body functions. It helps coordinate communication between your brain and the rest of your body, including the systems involved in everyday movement and function.

Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between the spine, the nervous system, and your overall musculoskeletal health. A chiropractic evaluation can help identify areas of restricted movement, joint dysfunction, or discomfort that may benefit from care.

My goal is to help you move and function as comfortably as possible as you prepare for this next chapter.

2. Address aches, pains, and movement restrictions before pregnancy.

Let's be honest — many women are already dealing with neck pain, back pain, tight hips, or discomfort from sitting at a desk all day before pregnancy even enters the picture.

As your body changes during pregnancy, your posture, movement patterns, and the demands placed on your muscles and joints change, too.

Taking time to address existing musculoskeletal concerns before pregnancy may help you feel more comfortable and give you a better starting point as your body changes.

"This is one reason I encourage women to be proactive about their chiropractic care rather than waiting until they're uncomfortable."

3. Pay attention to your posture and pelvic movement.

Your body is designed to move, and the way your spine, hips, and pelvis move can affect your comfort during everyday activities.

During a chiropractic visit, we can look at your posture, spinal mobility, and areas where you may be experiencing discomfort or restricted movement. If appropriate, care may include chiropractic adjustments and other movement recommendations tailored to your needs.

The goal isn't to make your pelvis "perfect" or guarantee a particular birth experience. It's to support healthy movement and help you feel your best as your body prepares for pregnancy.

4. Build healthy habits that support your body.

Chiropractic care is one part of taking care of yourself. What you do outside the office matters, too!

Regular movement
Nourishing foods
Adequate sleep
Hydration
Ways to manage stress

These habits support your overall health as you prepare for pregnancy.

I also recommend scheduling a preconception appointment with your healthcare provider to review medications, supplements, vaccinations, and any health concerns. Starting a prenatal vitamin with folic acid before pregnancy is important, too.

Think of it as building a strong foundation for the next stage of your family's journey.

5. Don't wait until you're pregnant to start taking care of yourself.

One of the biggest things I want women to understand is that you don't have to wait until you're pregnant to make your health a priority.

If you're considering chiropractic care, a preconception visit is a great opportunity to discuss your health history, your goals, any discomfort you're experiencing, and whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you.

Every woman is different, so your care should be based on your individual needs.

Preparing for pregnancy is about caring for the whole person.

I love working with women and families who want to be proactive about their health. Preparing for pregnancy gives you an opportunity to slow down, pay attention to your body, and build healthy habits before life gets even busier.

If you're thinking about growing your family, let's talk about how chiropractic care may fit into your wellness routine.

You don't have to wait until something hurts to start taking care of yourself!
